Character Artist 3 is the new add-on for Profantasy Software's Campaign Cartographer 3.

It's intended to be an easy way to create attractive character portraits, and to create cardboard minis or counters. It's also possiible to use the add-on's output to create artistic additions to maps (adding a couple of soldiers to hold up the map key, for instance).

So how good is it? Well, it's considerably better than its predecessor, the original Character Artist, which was produced for Campaign Cartographer 2 (in case anyone's wondering, there is no Character Artist 2; Profantasy have tagged all their CC3 add-on with a 3).

Compare these images. The first is the very basic output from the original Character Artist, created by a member of the HarnForum. The others are two images I knocked up in CA3 a few minutes ago; each took less than 5 minutes. The original CA was limited to vector graphics with a very limited colour palatte, and the need to keep file sizes down. The new version uses handdrawn symbols.

CA3 Pros

Relatively cheap - about £30 (Dh165) if you already have CC3.
Quick - less than 5 minutes to make an image.
    Attractive results
    Multiracial support
Can create most fantasy PC species and a good selection of monsters.

CA3 Cons

Limited poses - left and right hands have three poses each, but torsos and feet are always in the same pose
Annoying pose - all female characters are forced to have that annoying catwalk hip-thrust-out pose
Only supports typical medieval fantasy - nothing for modern day, SF, etc

I am loving CA3. I think its strength is in its ease of use and its cheapness. I intend to use it for cons where i can give players a picture of their PC, a 'group shot' of the aprty and then accurate paper minis.

Useful free paper-mini-creator

I have to say I am very impressed.

Given I do not have Campaign Cartographer though would it be worth buying the whole thing so I can finally stop stealing other people's pictures from Deviantart?

That really depends on whether you'd get any use out of the mapping functions of Campaign Cartographer. If you only want a character picture-maker, CA3 becomes rather expensive, as you have to buy CC3 as well.

However, I do recommend CC3 in its own right. It's excellent mapping software.
