Introduction

The GRC are pleased to announce their very first BBQ and Roleplaying Mini Con. This will be held from the evening of Thursday 23rd to midday (check out time) on Saturday 25 October 2014. The venue will be The Sandy Beach Hotel, Dibba, Fujairah (http://www.sandybm.com/features.htm).
Yes that’s right: this is a big GRC weekend away with all your favorite roleplayers, spouses and parents. The plan is:

Thursday

Gather Thursday night for dinner and socializing.

Friday (Islamic New Year’s Eve)

Morning will be free for gaming, beach, snorkeling or lying in bed.
‘Official’ play from 1300 hours until 1900 hours on Friday.
Friday evening will be a beach BBQ, with all welcome.

Saturday

Saturday morning will be a repeat of Friday morning (informal gaming as you like, beach, snorkeling or lying in bed) with a chance of a late check out.

Aim

This is our chance to get away from it all. A chance for spouses to relax and maybe even parents too (for the younger players). The beach BBQ at the adjacent ‘wild beach’ will be a chance to socialize in a way that roleplayers in other locales could only dream of.

Venue

Having visited several hotels in Fujairah, The Sandybeach Hotel was chosen because of its excellent beach, pool, Snoopy island and snorkeling. A paradise for those relaxing between, or during role-playing sessions; it was certainly not picked for the food or accommodation. These are nice Fujairah Chalets, but not 7 Star Emirates Palace Luxury. Emiratis are likely to be disappointed by the lack of space. British ex-pats are more than likely to revel in it all, and so expect sunburnt white faces and knotted handkerchiefs worn on heads.
Despite those shortcomings the venue is situated in D&D country with a backdrop of cardboard cut out hills, and a foreground of frothing sea and, of course, Snoopy Island. It is a great venue for us, at a reasonable cost, and with access to a nearby beach.

Roleplaying

The deluxe apartments are best suited for roleplaying. They have a fair sized coffee table and could seat about 6 people. The chalet’s are less so and could sit about 3-4/5 (including the ref). We will presume that all ‘venues’ are available for roleplaying on the official Friday session, but would listen to pleas for otherwise (maybe due to families wishing for space). If people wish to play games at other times that will be by arrangement with all those sharing the accommodation.

Booking

The rooms are already reserved. All booking is done through Russell Craig. He will ask you for money in advance. There will be no refunds. Price is per room and per night. Priority will go to those that book for two nights. If you wish to sleep two people to a room then ONE person will pay Russell and it is up to you to extract the money from the other person for yourself. A group booking discount has already been applied. Please do not book rooms yourself as this will result in Russell being out of pocket, and you won’t get the discounted rates we’ve negotiated

On offer are:

2 Bedroomed chalets. 434 AED/night/room. NO BREAKFAST. These are very small and basic rooms with one double room and one twin room. A fridge is available as is a pocket sized BBQ, outdoors. There is a small living room.

Deluxe 2 bedroom chalet. Breakfast. 521 AED/night/room. These are slightly larger with one twin and one double room. A fridge is available, but no BBQ area. There is a bigger living room.
Please email OR Facebook Russell for signup. Download the current PDF from the post below.

If you wish to book up a whole chalet and dictate who lodges then that can be arranged with Russell. We will presume that, unless you state otherwise, you will be placed in a chalet of the category paid for at our whim. So talk to your buddies and get a group booking to Russell ASAP. If you wish to visit, and not stay then the hotel demands a 75 AED fee per day.

Behaviour

The GRC is a multi-cultural group which adheres to the laws of The UAE and its standards and customs. As usual, all GRC members will adhere to these too.
Roleplaying

Refs are to signup to the Refs Facebook page we’ll be setting up for the event, and then advertise on the main GRC Facebook page. All player signups to be coordinated through Russell. We need at least 3 refs.

Summary

This will be a great weekend: sun, surf and roleplaying. What more can anyone ask for?

BBQ details

The BBQ is a bring your own affair. I need volunteers to bring:

Wood for a fire
BBQ set (gas/charcoal whatever)
BBQ utensils
BBQ wire frame

And then people rock up with their own food and eat it. You can volunteer here or on Facebook.

Just had a a great question from a GRC JNR member. Of course young people can come -- as long as they are accompanied by an adult. They can attend roleplaying sessions and the adult can pick them up after the game. In the meantime the adult(s) can play in the pool or bar. Like a creche for adults!

Chalets have: 1 sink, a fridge, NO cooker. Both rooms share a bathroom.
They have: 1 king size bedroom and 2 single bedrooms.

2 Bedroom apartment have: 1 sink, a fridge, NO cooker. The master bedroom has a bathroom. The smaller one uses a bathroom off the living room.

The restaurant caters for vegetarians each meal, but I cannot vouch for the meals.

I have a reasonably portable charcoal BBQ on my balcony I can probably bring along with fuel etc. Given the demographics I would suggest we have at least two - one for halal and one for infidel foodstuffs. Is there a ruling on fermented beverages (ie can we bring our own?).
